Adopt a Pet

Steps To Adopt A Pet Cat or Dog

  1. Come to the shelter during business hours.
  2. Fill out an application form. Matching pets with their new owners is a high priority for the division. Due to background checks, sterilization verification and other legal issues, the adoption application process can take as much as 48 hours.
  3. You will need to provide a legal photo ID, and proof that any pets at home have a current rabies vaccination.
  4. If you have other pets in your household, you may want to bring them to the animal shelter for introduction with the animal you wish to adopt to determine if temperament of the animal will be compatible.
  5. If you have children under the age of 6, or elderly family members, you may want to have them visit with the animal prior to the adoption to help assure a good placement and mitigate any problems that could happen before you bring your new pet home.
  6. Pay adoption fees for your new pet and arrange to take him or her home safely from the veterinarian after completion of the sterilization.
