FOOD TRUCK FRIDAY TO BEGIN AT THE GOVERNMENT CENTER

Anyone near the Government Center on 11th Street this Friday is invited to come check out the new food truck parking area where assorted vendors will offer their menus weekly.

The food truck parking is located on the southeastern campus of the Bay County Government Center, across the parking lot from the Bay County Public Library, located at 898 W. 11th St. The vending area features space for two trucks to park and picnic seating, with a covered pavilion scheduled for construction soon.

“We wanted to create a space to help out the food vendors while also promoting downtown,” Bay County Commission Chairman Philip “Griff” Griffitts said. “Food trucks are the ‘in’ thing going on around the country, and this space provides them with a place to be and the public with different choices for lunch.”

The food truck area is located where a county storage building stood before being destroyed by Hurricane Michael. The debris from the damaged building was removed, and fill and crushed asphalt was brought in to create the space, Bay County Public Works Director Keith Bryant said. All of the work was done in-house.

The first food trucks to park at the site will be Smok N Butts BBQ and Taqueria Sanchez from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. On March 6, Crepe and Cream and Grub Slinger will be the featured trucks.

“This program is organic, and we’ll make adjustments as necessary,” Griffitts said, “and we’re hopeful that it’s successful and leads to trucks being there more days than Friday.”

Interested vendors can call Bay County Parks and Recreation at 248-8690 to get on the schedule. The schedule of trucks is available on the county’s events calendar at baycountyfl.gov.
