System Funding

Bay County Fire/Rescue prehospital care is funded by two mechanisms: 1) fees for service, and; 2) general revenue to make up any remaining cost that the first two are unable to cover.

Bay County Fire/Rescue billing rates are set by the Board of  County Commissioners. Rates are determined based on the costs of operating the prehospital system. We charge an applicable base rate and mileage for all transports. Patients who receive treatment and are transported by other means or refuse ambulance transport may be assessed an applicable base rate for services rendered.

Insurance Coverage

Bay County Fire/Rescue does not contract with any private insurance companies. There is no benenfit to the taxpayers of Bay County for BCFR to enter into reduced rates with private insurance companies since the BOCC does not recoup charges above what insurance pays, provided your annual deducatable has been satsified. 

If you are treated and/or transported by Bay County Fire/Rescue and are covered by commercial health insurance we encourage you to scrutinize the details of coverage contained in your policy to verify that the insurance provider is covering the transport at the level stated in the policy. Many private insurance providers cover 80% to 90% of charges for an emergency ambulance transport.
